Grab Every Opportunity

The first one to three years, take up any kind of writing work. Don’t be choosy. This is the time for you to explore and experiment. Try marketing literature, technical writing, PowerPoint presentations, video scripts, speeches, newsletters, etc. Content writing jobs are aplenty, but you need to know where your skill lies.

As you do this you will learn the ropes. You will learn how to edit. How to keep content simple and sharp. You will work with leaders who will teach you how to write with impact.

Have Published Works

While doing the above, write for external magazines. There are several online ones. Some pay, some don’t. But don’t worry about that. You are using these opportunities to build your portfolio. Again, you will know where you fit in as a writer and will understand your strengths.

This will make your resume more attractive. Hiring managers will be impressed with published works.  It’s so much better than saying I am good at this, or that. If you can show them the proof, your chances are much better.

Setup Your Blog

These days it’s so easy to have your blog. WordPress offers several free templates. Make use of them smartly find your niche and start posting frequently. Use images to make it look attractive. And share the blog links with friends and family. You could share it with your boss at work. It helps them see your passion.

Knowing the blog backend comes in handy. Knowing how to pick the right copyright-free images is again handy.

 

Write For Social Media

The social media revolution is one of the biggest boons for writers. You can share links to your blogs, interesting writing facts, and so much more. This will build your credentials and help people find you.

Is that not what we want as writers? To be found and to get varied types of writing from a diverse clientele. This is if you’re freelancing. If you are a corporate content writer, it will help you find new jobs, lucrative ones. Also, comment and like posts related to your niche.

Have Graphic Editing Skills

This will be very useful. You don’t have to be a visual artist. Some quick photo editing skills, color corrections, and cropping will go a long way. In fact, PowerPoint templates allow you to build fliers. Do master them and you won’t have to share your pie with graphic designers.

You will be considered a resourceful person and you will be sought after. Moreover, when you write the content you will know what images go with it. Otherwise, you will have to sit with a graphics specialist and explain it to them.

 

Expand Into Other Areas

Related areas of content writing are Marketing and Branding. Familiarize yourself with these topics. So that as you move forward in your career you can oversee marketing campaigns and brand initiatives. Even if you are a freelancer, you can transform into a content consultant. As a consultant, you can actively guide small organizations to have a full-fledged marketing communication initiatives.

While there are several other ways of furthering one’s career as a content writer. These are the most important that every content writer must pay attention to build a thriving career in the content writing profession.
