UTurn: Samantha’s Full Blown Performance

Hello Friends,

U Turn is a fine film that takes a simple subject and packages it so well that you are rooted to your seats, at least the first half of the film. This is Samantha’s first (if I am right) outing as the main character who carries the film entirely on her shoulders.

Having seen her playing second fiddle, and just running round the trees with top heroes in countless movies this film is indeed her graduation day. She has chosen well and acts every inch the inquisitive nosy journalist. Her mild crush on the crime reporter, and dressing up to ensnare him are all natural and apt. She has also dubbed for herself, while there are several reviews condemning her own voice, I found it quite relatable.

But just when I was thinking to myself, here’s a nice suspense thriller, it suddenly petered out into a horror flick of ghosts and super natural powers. That kind of diluted for me the intensity of the film and it immediately the tight plot knitted with care so far began to loosen up. Second half of the film is all about the ghosts (mother and child) who have been killed by the careless U turns that people take at the Velacherry flyover playing revenge.

So the first half is about the investigative reporter trying to build an interesting story of the Velacherry flyover and the mindless U Turn that people take and how it causes accidents, the second half is about the ghosts killing the people who have taken the U turns. So the second half, logically speaking is a way too implausible but then it’s a film and you need a plot and elements to hook the viewer.

All in all, a neat film and a good watch, specially to see Samantha evolve as a fine actor.
