Sreedevi: The Saga Ends

By February 28, 2018No Comments

Hello Friends,

As a school going young girl who grew up watching SreeDevi Ayyapan in Tamil films and later on in several other regional languages, I must say I was bowled over by her beauty like the rest of India. As I got older I learned to appreciate what a fine actor she was and the ease with which she essayed multiple complex roles.

Tall, voluptuous body, sparkling eyes, pretty smile, flawless complexion she was the true essence of beauty and elegance. I recall with chagrin how many times I tried to ape her dressing style and demeanor, such was the impact SreeDevi had not only on men but on women as well.

The happenings of last week are extremely painful for fans like us who have been silently admiring her for ages. We know not how and why she died, and the several stories that are going around are shocking and clearly tell us that she was plagued by financial woes and family troubles.

It goes to prove the age old proverb – looks are deceptive. Behind those glamorous looks there lay a person who was very shy, lonely, anxious and pressured to be constantly beautiful. She was robbed of the joys of childhood, had to perpetually bear the stigma of being the other woman, underwent multiple surgeries to look good, attempted a comeback for financial reasons and was very worried for her daughters as well.

Her passing away teaches us the impermanence of life and also drives home the fact that chasing beauty that is skin deep will never be the passport to happiness. Actors will have to treat this as a wakeup call and work towards building financial stability and focus on family and lasting relationships.
