MUSIC ACADEMY: MUSIC AND MORE

Hello Friends,

A recent concert at the Music Academy left me speechless and wanting for more! A spellbound audience, pin drop silence, high profile VIPs and passionate music kept me rooted to the seat.  Off late the name that is doing the rounds in the Carnatic music circle is that of Sandeep Narayan’s. My curiosity picked sufficiently I walked into the hall looking forward to listen to this artiste, and when the curtains open I see a young man, with a hint of a smile, stroking his beard and contemplating. And then the music begins and there was no stopping him.

Krithis, ragams, swarams, neravals just gushed out enthralling the audience one after the other. With supreme confidence Sandeep embarks on each song and extracts the essence out of each raga thus giving the listener the very best. We gather that Sandeep was LA based and has relocated to Chennai to pursue Carnatic music full time from 2006. A right decision undoubtedly! He also stands out for being the courageous man who has gotten off the beaten track to follow his heart. While it is very easy to say pursue your dreams, the climb is pretty uphill but here is a man who has done that! Hats off to Sandeep Narayan!

The concert at the Music Academy began with a brisk paced varnam and then a Nattai Ragam krithi, which really set the tone for concert. Both were brisk and invigorating. A leisurely sung Ragam Sahana and Ragam Thodi with very detailed alapanams really demonstrated the artiste’s in-depth knowledge of the same.  Must say the camaraderie between the percussionists always makes the concert that much more enjoyable and it was evident in Sandeeps’ as well.  All in all a great performance, and here is an artist to watch out who is going to go places, I am sure.
