Usage:

  • The students were in a state of ennui but the professor made the course interesting and revived their interest
  • Despite her ennui she forged ahead and completed her projects on time
  • Cocooned at home during the lockdown left all of us in a state of ennui

Etymology: The word ennui comes from an old French word meaning “profound sadness, chagrin, or disgust.”
