Bosotto Brothers: Unpretentious And Delicious

Hello Friends,

Well yes, the amount of new and stylish cafes, boutique tea rooms and coffee on the go places are abounding in the city. But the old world charm, the nostalgia, and the unbeatable quality that some of the old bakery shops famous in the 80s and 90s offer, is indeed a special experience. I have visited the Bosotto Brother bakery in the late 80s and have enjoyed their vegetable patties and cupcakes.

However, with Chennai becoming fashionable with English Tea Room, La Boulangerie, French Loaf, Old Madras Baking company, Winners Bakery, Lloyds Tea House, Coffee Shastra and several others entering the picture, Bosotto was long forgotten. Even the Cakes and Bakes on Nungambakkam High Road which used to be a happening place in the 90s looks a tad downtrodden now. As I walked past Cakes and Bakes, I did see a small nook of a place being occupied by Bosotto Brothers on Nungambakkam High Road. While I was tempted to try, I was a little hesitant about the quality.

Yet I ventured, only to be welcomed by the aroma of freshly baked bread, bun butter jam and a sparkling clean interior just barely enough to accommodate four or five people maximum.  A mild mannered pleasant gentleman at the counter helped me make my choice of a big fat vegetable puff. Limited stocks of cakes, buns, birthday cakes, samosas, chips and bread was stocked. All of them were smelling delicious! You can sit down in one of those plastic chairs and watch the traffic snarl by as you dip into your snack!

As I bit into my vegetable the creamy layers melted in my mouth giving way to vegetables crunchy and tasty. It has been such a long time since I tasted such a well-made one, the versions that I have had in the recent past were oily and smelling like a hundred years old. To go with it, they served me a elaichi tea, which was simply out of the world. As a diehard coffee drinker, I thoroughly enjoyed this new taste and vowed to drink more of this elaichi chai concoction. On a hot afternoon, stopping by at Bosotto savouring the puff and swirling the tea turned out to be one of the most enjoyable moments. Simple pleasures of life! Thankyou Bosotto for still being there.
