Ajith’s Vivegam: Weak and Weather-Beaten

All the recent films from the big league are failing to impress. Be it Dhanush’s VIP2 or Ajith’s Vivegam, the films are not living up to the expectations and buzz created pre-launch.  Agree, these are top heroes we are talking about and they have their huge fan base to satisfy. And naturally they cannot be boxed into small story set ups, but are not films extensions of stories? Somewhere there should be a storyline that coherently brings events together.

In Vivegam, the crew needs to be applauded for one thing, which is, the making of the movie despite a complete lack of a story. This is a task in itself because the screenplay would have been such a challenge and I still wonder how they kept track of the flow of the movie.

The good points are there is enough of a global scene, and you are taken on a tour of Europe, well almost. Costumes are nice, the action sequences are convincing and it is certainly on par with a Hollywood movie. But where is the story? Is Ajay Kumar, aka AK a cop from FBI? CBI? Interpol? None of it is clear. And who is the internet hacker Natasha? Is she a spy, why is AK chasing her?

Arumai Prakasam (Karunakaran) trying to provide comic relief only irates the viewer further. And moreover is he a translator or body guard? If translator which language are they talking about. Yazhini (Kajal Agarwal) as the dutiful wife way too understanding and the romance though provides a bit of a change from the shooting is sickeningly sweet.

When directors have such golden opportunities to direct top heroes and get all the infrastructure support, why cannot they come up with something worthwhile? Maybe we will keep asking this question each time we watch something as weak and weather-beaten as this.

Cheers
