Varathan: Startling Suspense Thriller

Hello Friends,

If you are a fan of sensible cinema, of Malayalam films and you enjoy watching Fahadh Fazil then please don’t miss his recent outing – Varathan. It’s heartwarming to see Aisherwya Lekshmi (heroine) sharing sufficient screen space with Fahadh and matching him in every move. It’s one of the best films that I have watched in recent times and excels in terms of content, plot, screenplay, location, sequence and of course realistic performances.

It’s a fairly a simple story, in fact, it’s a flimsy plot but it has been solidified aptly with the sequence of events naturally flowing from one to the other. Not for a moment the director, Amal Neerad lets you off the hook. He takes the viewer all the way with him and into the problem-ridden life of Abin and Priya who have relocated to Priya’s ancestral property, a secluded farmhouse in the hills. Just when you think it’s a story of ghosts and supernatural, the story unfurls to clearly tell you a tale of stalking and bullying the young couple by the strong locals.

It is also a tale of how a peace-loving IT professional who has lost his job is deciding his next career move. But his quiet world is turned upside down and he is catapulted into action or rather forced into violence when his young, pretty wife is harassed. It is not a transition to action out of the blue, but a well-formed sequence when his wife accuses him of not being man enough to protect her.

Fahadh and Aishwerya look every inch the young, educated couple and their fight for survival and final redemption makes it’s a fantastic film. One thing though, the final fight sequence could have been trimmed and made simpler keeping in line with the realistic theme of the film.
