A stunning Surya with his handsome looks keeps us hooked to this film – Thana Serndha Kootam. Agreeably the title of the film is interesting indeed. However, the title has nothing to do with the story and remains only as a name.
Specially after seeing Surya in the Singam franchise as the forever angry cop, mouthing dialogues nonstop this film comes as a much needed break. Here we get to see the actor in a more relaxed outing, with smiles and charm intact. But that said, the film deals with unemployment and how bribery earns employment and not merit. Triggered by the suicide of a friend who is unable to realize his dream of becoming a policeman in spite of all the right qualifications. Fuelling this incident Surya also is unable to bag the much coveted post of a CBI officer, hence decides to become one by himself. What follows forms the storyline, with interludes of Keerthi Suresh and how Surya falls in love with her.
Ramya Krishnan as the fake CBI officer fails to impress as the mother of half a dozen children and a handicapped husband. After the majestic Rajmatha of Bahubali it is with difficulty that you accept her in other less significant roles. But one has to move on and she cannot rest on her laurels, agreed. Suresh Menon the erstwhile actor makes a come back, as we have been seeing in a few movies now. Neat performance by him and we also get to see another yester year actor – Karthik. Somehow when such stalwart actors make a comeback, the roles for them need to be sketched out vividly else it does not make an impact. There could have been a meatier role for Karthik as it was confusing if he was a CBI or police officer.
All in all, a decent entertainer that does not absorb you.
