With all of the August film releases falling short of expectations except though for Vikram Vedha, Taramani makes it nearly almost. Taramani is a film about man – woman relationship and of course how women are being exploited. The narration style with Director Ram providing voice over every now and then is different and refreshing. The film unfolds in a unique way with subtle story telling technique and catches you by surprise when it breaks the shackles of stereotypes. It touches delicate relationship issues and taboos such as: homosexuality, sexual harassment, live in relationship, divorce, single mother, woman drinking and smoking.
But what I fail to understand is though; will a woman speak to a man who looks shady and like a jail convict? Is not her personal safety more important than companionship? Also why should she take the onus for the divorce when she finds that her husband is gay? Incompatibility is one of the most popular reason for divorce and she could well resorted to the same. And what rankles me the most, is the fact that she is in abusive relationship and her lover forever doubts her, but she remains to suffer in silence and wants him back in her life. Also her lover while separated from her resorts to stealing and sleeps with any woman at the drop of a hat. These aspects mar the otherwise sensible film of a woman caught in the vicious circle of victimization.
Althea (Andrea) does a phenomenal job of a single mother desperate for a relationship. She is so convincing that you easily empathize with her. New comer Vasanth Ravi does a neat job.The sequence of the police inspector and his wife is also marvellous, excellent acting. If the loopholes had been fixed, Taramani could have been a show stopper.
