Hello Friends,12

In the list of Taare Zameen Par, Cheeni Kum, Black, Paa, Dirty Picture, Kahani, Burfi, Lunchbox, Queen etc. now we have the priceless Piku.  Those of you who have watched the film will know what I am writing about, for those who have not – it is definitely a piece of life well packaged into a two hour clip that all of us has can relate to, easily.

Even as we see the cast and crew names flashing on the screen at the start of the film, we sense something nice and novel is going to be played. The presentation credits is simple with a just a red dot appearing as part of every name against a black backdrop. Simple but striking. That is precisely the mood throughout the film.

Plot: The plot revolves around a father (Amitabh Bachchan) – daughter (Deepika Padukone) duo whose love hate relationship forms the crux of the film. And in between comes in a cab service owner (Irrfan Khan) who is stuck with them in a journey from Delhi to Kolkatta.  The daughter is single and is on the lookout for a man who can be the emotional anchor in her life, but Daddy dear seems not to like the idea and wards off the men in her life. The travel to Kolkatta seems to be pivotal as while they set out to sell their ancestral house there, eventually change their minds and Daddy breathes his last as well in Kolkatta. The start of a very beautiful relationship between the daughter and the cab service owner commences.

Costumes: Clothes and hairstyles are what contemporary urban man and woman wear in daily lives.  Very elegant, working class suits in lovely shades dazzle us. Deepika is gorgeous, be it in her pyjamas, jeans, salwars or sarees. Amitabh in his loose fitting kurtas and perpetual sweaters is so the health obsessed father. Irrfan on the other hand, is casually dressed as any taxi stand owner would be, nothing overt anywhere.

Décor: A Delhi upper middle class home is where a large part of the film takes place. It’s a tastefully done household with plants, cutlery, lamp shades, four poster beds, pictures and objets d’art.

Acting: It is so new to see a dad who does not want his daughter married, and in that role Amitabh is at his best. Deepika as the angry daughter pottering about the house is simply marvelous. She is so natural as she goes from being the yelling daughter to a woman who is so tired of constantly organizing things, to a daughter who is resigned to her fate as she check the BP levels of her father. But who I enjoyed the most was Irrfan who does not require dialogues at all. He can convey most of it through a shrug of the shoulders, raised eyebrow, a half smile, confused look and a body language that visibly can talk on its own!

BT Discovery: Constipation is discussed in great detail throughout the film as the father suffers from the same.

BT Bottom Line: We had a beautiful time watching Piku and our recommendation for the film is SUPER STRONG!

Cheers
