Hello Friends,
Frankly, the name itself was riveting and so very attractive. Kumbalangi Nights is indeed a film that lives up to the hype that the name of the film creates. It’s a family story allright, but a family story that has disjointed members each living his life independently without any commonality – except that of sharing the same roof. A tale of four brothers and all of them are at loggerheads with each other and the two of them share different mothers as well. Why the rift between them is not dealt with in great detail, but the film opens with their indifference to each other.
After a slightly slow start the movie picks up speed, and dwells on each of the brother, their struggles, their falling in love and the way they find a meaning in life towards the end. The Faahad interludes are terrifying and the way with just a smile he is able to evoke so much of fear and he reeks of menace all through. Hats off to Faahadh for creating yet another stupendous performance. The performance of Soubin Shabir ought to be applauded. He lives the character of a wastrel so well, that at the juncture when he is the reason for Ramesh Thilak’s death and the helplessness he portrays is amazing. The ladies for their part have done a phenomenal job, be it Sheela Rajkumar, Anna Ben or Riya Saira.
How it all culminates into the mega fight when Faahad’s craziness manifests and he beats and locks up the women of the family is indeed a fitting finale. Those scenes have you sitting at the edge of the seat and biting your nails.
All in all, a must watch film if you like offbeat Malayalam films.
