Hello Friends,
The quiet release of Rajinikanth’s Kaala was welcoming as we are so used a great deal of pre-movie hype. Kaala takes us to Mumbai, a la Varadaraja Mudaliar of Nayagan fame, Karikaalan (Rajinikanth) is a don who wields power in the Dharavi area. Not much is clear in terms of why and how he became a don, of course, there is an animated narrative that gives the flashback of a young Kaala.
The story directly plunges in and shows a mature and older Kaala much in love with his wife and surrounded by his family. It is refreshing to see a new crop of actors, unfamiliar and forgotten faces brought in and all of them have essayed their roles to perfection. But what is a talented actor like Samuthirakani doing as Kaala’s drunken friend? He is forever tottering in a drunken stupor and not adding much value to the storyline.
Understandably, actor Dhanush as the films’ produces has introduced elements that are close to his heart, like for instance Samuthirakani of VIP fame. Ranjith, as the films’ director, has done a neat job in creating a set of sequences and situations with well etched out characters but somehow the magic is missing. Rajini as a don is pretty clichéd by now and just when his fans and the general public are eager to see him in meatier roles, we don’t want Baasha repetitions.
Superstar Rajini is known for amazing performances in films when his career was beginning to light up, so it is obvious that he is a great actor. As viewers, we are keen to see him experiment and come up with roles that suit his age and style. Why not movies like Pink or Piku for him?
