Dhanush’s VIP 2: Missing Magic

Actor Dhanush’s VIP 2 has all the trappings of a great movie. Sequel 1 that was a super hit, Kajol from Bollywood, Soundarya Rajinikanth at the helm of affairs, Amala Paul looking  every inch glamourous, rich costumes and of course Dhanush who has matured to be a fine actor that he can portray any role with ease.

But unfortunately the film falls flat and does not impact you.  Actors such as Samuthirakani and Vivek are merely wall flowers with a few lines to mouth every now and then, who are capable of much better stuff.

Plot wise there is not much as the fact that Vasundhara (Kajol) is livid when Raghuvaran (Dhanush) turns down a job offer she makes. And the set of events that follow are only aggravating the tension between them and there is a classic case of a young hero at loggerheads with a lady conglomerate owner. Sadly, the reason for them being so hostile with each other is very flimsy and juvenile. And the viewer is caught between two women who are constantly bawling their heads off. Yes Shalinin (Amala Paul) as the wife is forever ticking things to do and chiding everyone at home. And the scenes where she pulls up her husband for the simplest of wrongdoings is boring and clichéd.

Perhaps Dhanush was attempting a Padayappa of sorts, like Padayappa (Rajinikanth) against Neelambari (Ramya Krishnan). Whatever be the reasoning, why the two are enemies could have been stronger and they suddenly becoming friends in an overnight rain makes it flimsier.

Forming of the company VIP 2 Constructions, and a sudden villain entry and all the unemployed youth standing by Dhanush even if they lose their jobs is quite unbelievable. Can people just throw their jobs for the sake of friendship? Is life as simple and sweet as that?

All in all what could have turned out to be a great movie simply does not click. The actors and their off screen chemistry and the admiration that they have for Dhanush is best kept within themselves – the viewer does not need to be dragged into this.
