Hello Friends,
There are sometimes when you get to watch an extraordinary film and walk out of the theatre teary eyed and thoughtful (though such instances are pretty rare). Dangal is one such. Therefore, the viewer tends to cherish such films and everyone gets talking about it.
It is a welcome change to note that directors and writers are exploring new subjects and genres. And if you are terribly tired of Tasmac brawls, instant love followed by stalking, sudden scene shifts to Switzerland and lewd comedy then – Dangal will take you away from all of this and tell you subtly what good cinema is all about. It is the story of a father’s lost dreams and how he eventually realizes them through his two daughters.
Emotions such as disappointment, love, determination, betrayal and finally pride gets blended together to form an amazing amalgam. Needless to mention Aamir Khan’s acting is simply superb and the way he transforms from a young strict father to a proud middle aged parent is outstanding. But the two young girls Geeta and Babitha before they become young lady wrestlers steal the show. Their hatred for the strict exercise regimen and their yearning for enjoying the delights of girlhood are heartwarming. The way they go berserk at their friend’s wedding breaking loose from all their shackles is so captivating. And the way they change their mind after understanding the true love of their father is equally beautiful.
Plot:
Dangal is based on the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat who trained his two daughters to become wrestlers. Young Aamir Khan’s hopes are dashed when he is unable to pursue his passion – wrestling due to financial constraints. So he hopes to bring his dreams back to life through his children. However, he has four daughters and thinks that is the end of his dreams. But, one day his daughters return home after beating up boys who bully them. It is then that the father realizes their strength and knows that they have the potential to become wrestlers in future. So he goes all out to train them and finally pushes them to representing the country. So all that happens during this journey forms the entire plot.
Decor:
The rural Haryana is well represented in the small lanes and in the house that the family lives in. Open tandoor, small rooms, fields for running are all so natural.
Costumes:
Simple, faded salwar kameezs and tracks as they graduate to the next level for the girls blend so well with the story and characters. Amir’s permanent yellowed shirts and loose pants make him look sad and vulnerable. As young Geeta moves to the city and how she gets influenced by others and the minor changes in her dressing are all so endearing and realistic.
