The botanical garden
Hello Friends,
What began as a small vegetable garden for the Europeans settled in Ooty during the British rule is today the most beautiful place in the hill station – The Botanical Garden. This huge place of about 22 hectares is a heritage property much sought after by the tourists. It is presently maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. Just when I wondered how much this lovely garden can hold as most of the tourists seemed to be heading towards the Botanical Garden – I was pretty surprised by the long, spacious and well maintained lawns that welcomed me.
And the annual famous flower show of Ooty is conducted at the Botanical Gardens.
If you thought that this is all there is to the Botanical Garden, think again, as each curve and slope leads to more bright flowers, rows of potted plants, and an astounding range of cacti. In fact there is a glass house with exotic varieties cactus.
Rows and rows of brilliantly coloured flowers
Range of cacti in different shapes and sizes
More and more potted plants
And interestingly enough, plonk in the middle of the Botanical Garden there is a lovely alcove with seating arrangement. And if you walk past this place, you can climb into a jungle like higher plateau to get a vantage view of this place from above. The view from the top is great!
Exotic tree trunks brought in from different parts of the country
Lotus pond bang in the middle of the garden
Most of the shrubs are cut to varied shapes catching the eye of the tourist
Very unique shapes of tree, which normally we don’t get to see elsewhere
