Hast Karigar in Chennai: Exhibition cum sale of amazing handicrafts and more

Exhibitions in Chennai come and go easily! From ethnic sarees, salwars, yardage, handicrafts, home décor, gadgets, footwear, furnishings, furniture, fabric and all the way to real estate and properties one can buy anything all-round the year.  But how many of them are real value for money? How many times do you come home with a product that you are proud of only to find it not functioning within a few weeks? Scene sounds all too familiar? Well I had been noticing (reading about) the Hast Karigar Exhibition cum sale and decided to pay a visit lured by the colourful and beautiful images I saw in the papers.

The Hast Karigar is an exhibition-cum-sale of traditional Indian Weaves, Paintings, Crafts and Hand Block Prints recently concluded in the city was an arresting display of items from across India. There was a mindboggling array of weaves, paintings, jewellery, metal art and embroidery from the tribal areas of West Bengal, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa and Karnataka. It is good to know that this is a forum that provides a great opportunity for talented crafts person from across India.

On the sarees front there was an heady mix of Chanderi, Maheshwari, Tussar, Jamdani, Ikat, Pachampally, Kosa, Banarasi, Kanchipuram, Khesh, Paithani on display. To go along with this stone and silver jewellery was really very tempting.

About Hast Karigar

The Hast Karigar Society founded by a group of artisans, designers, social activists, academics and environmentalists, attempts to promote exquisite traditional skill and creations of the artisans and weavers while encouraging them to be contemporary and economically relevant.  Hast Karigar exhibitions emphasise on redefining the traditional skills of its member artisans to recreate a market that showcases Indian tradition and heritage while being sensitive to the present day requirements of the connoisseurs.
